Just a year after losing my Grandmother, my grandad suffered a sudden heart attack and spent a number of weeks in intensive care. A short time after he woke and returned to our family home, he and I sat on his bed as he told me how proud he was of me. A few minutes later, I thanked him but said it was hard to take him serious as he sat perched on the edge of his bed, wearing only a white vest and his underpants with a catheter bag to match, attached to his leg because he could no longer use the toilet in the way he had for the past 80-something years. For the next 5 minutes, we couldn’t help control our fits of laughter as we stared at the grey bag slowly filling with yellow liquid that pretty much covered the circumference of his calf and a tap pointing down to his foot, it was like it wasn’t really happening to him and that he was almost taking the mickey out of people that have to depend on this. My grandad knew he was dying and with great strength he spent his last days telling his family how much we all meant to him, and I’ll never forget the moment he told me he is going to miss me ~ the most surreal, yet heartwarming message I’ve ever heard. So to celebrate my late grandparents, I am dedicating this page to them, for they lived each day as it was, something I don’t think our society today is terribly great at. We have many hang-ups and not to mention the struggle of mental health that in some way or another affects us all.
